“A Day with Dad”, written by Bo Holmberg and illustrated by Eva Eriksson, is a gentle and fun book about how a boy and his dad can build a life together even when they (presumably) live apart.

Dad arrives at the train station to meet his son and son’s mother, before whisking the boy away for an adventure around town. They stop at their favorite places to eat, read books at the library, and go to the movies. At each stop, it is clear that the son is proud of his father, and father is proud of his son. It concludes with a melancholy, though richly wholesome, parting back at the train station.

The book has some dialogue, though there is no chasing speech bubbles around the page. Each page spread contains it’s contents (there are no suspenseful pauses during page turns). There are plenty of spots to stop, look at the pictures, and reflect without hindering the action.

I recommend it.

The book is a "slice of life", with nothing too exciting or out of the ordinary to take away from just the special feeling of spending time with a dad (or any separated parent/caregiver). The illustrations are warm and familiar, and stays out of the way of actually reading the text.
